The Region of Peel provides post secondary full-time students valuable work experience and allows for a wealth of learning opportunities.
There are three (3) categories of student employment available with the Region of Peel.
Category one - Labourer positions (outdoor positions including general maintenance, grounds keeping, road crew)
Category two - Administrative Support positions (indoor office positions)
Category three - Specialized positions (mostly indoor office positions and requires specialized education e.g. civil engineering; positions available are limited)
Compensation: Students are paid an hourly rate with 4% vacation added to their bi-weekly pay. Rates differ depending on the type of position. Wages will be confirmed at the time of job offer.
Eligibility Criteria: In order to qualify for summer employment with the Region of Peel, students must be currently enrolled in full-time studies at a community college or university and must be returning to full-time studies in the following school term.
Students are required to show proof of enrolment for the fall school term of 2012.
We will accept any of the following as proof of enrolment:
A letter from your Registrar confirming enrolment for 2012/2013
A letter or screen shot showing registration for 2011/2012 at your current school in addition to a letter or screen shot confirming your application to a 2012/2013 program at a future college/university
Screening Criteria: Selection is based on the following considerations:
(i) Primary consideration shall be qualified students who have completed one
or more years of post-secondary education (college or university).
(ii) Preference shall then be given to qualified students about to commence
post-secondary schooling.
Students must be available to work continuously from April 30, 2012 until the end of August 2012.
Students are not eligible for vacation/time off during summer employment.

THE COSTI CORVETTI EDUCATION CENTRE REQUIRES AN INTAKE COUNSELLOR FROM THE HORN OF AFRICA REGION

DUTIES
- Assesses clients’ needs in regards to settlement issues and/or career guidance.
- Refers client to other agencies or in-house for further counselling.
- Develops short term and long term case management counselling services.
- Administers ESL proficiency tests and registers clients in courses.
- Liaises with other agencies and organizations regarding services for clients.
- Inputs cases in database system and prepares statistical reports.
- Facilitates groups and workshops for newcomers.
- Provides administrative support for centre (evening work).
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to work afternoons, Monday to Thursday (between the hours of 10:45am to 8:30pm).
- Community college diploma in a social service field or equivalent.
- Minimum nine months experience in providing settlement services.
- Ability to communicate in Amharic and/or other East African languages is essential.
- Must have previous experience working with people from the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia).
- Good customer service and sensitivity to newcomer clients.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $22.01 – $23.69 per hour

DUTIES
- Prepare and facilitate in-person and on-line workshops in areas related to employment and pre-employment.
- Conduct extended (1-4 week) structured workshops for targeted client groups such as immigrants, youth, experienced/laid off workers or women.
- Liaise with Employment Consultants regarding changes to employment action plans and need for non-employment services and support.
- Instruct clients on resume development and self-marketing strategies, effective interview skills and phone calling techniques, among other job search tools and techniques.
- Assist clients to outreach and market themselves to employers to ensure placements.
- Provide technical and professional support to clients using centre services.
- Provide feedback on clients’ resumes, cover letters, employment solicitation, follow up and thank you letters.
- Records services provided in various databases including CIS, conducts an initial service needs assessment to determine the need for COSTI provided assistance or community services referrals.
- Evaluate validity of on-line resources relevant to career planning and development, job search strategies, and employment opportunities.
- Recruit employers for job fairs/employer events and coordinate marketing and delivery as part of an annual marketing strategy in collaboration with Business Liaison.
- Liaise with and makes presentations to other community organizations, ethno specific agencies, training institutions, regulatory bodies, etc. to increase awareness about COSTI’s programs and services.
Compile statistics both electronically and in hardcopy using designated forms and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Community College diploma or equivalent, preference will be given to those with Career and Work diploma.
- Minimum 9 months group facilitation and employment counselling experience.
- Strong marketing background with experience placing clients in a corporate environment.
- Experience in developing placements for a variety of professions/occupations.
- Knowledge of the current labour market and industry trends.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent knowledge of community agencies and resources.
- Excellent negotiation, communication (oral & written) and interpersonal skills.
- High organizational skills with ability to work in a team.
- Knowledge of current computer packages: Word, E-mail, Internet.
- Car is an asset.

- Provides assessment of client needs and development of both short and long term counselling and orientation programs to newcomers, refugee claimants, foreign born Canadian Citizens and others in need of assistance.
- The position will be serving the Italian community but not exclusively.
- Organizes and facilitates group orientation sessions.
- Provides outreach to the community; promotes the programs and services of the agency.
- Provides follow-up to clients.
- Liaises with government, community groups, educational institutions and volunteers.
- Keeps administrative records of services and activities and prepares necessary reports.
- Data entry of client and service information.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Community College diploma in Social Services or equivalent.
- Minimum two years experience in providing settlement services and in organising and facilitating groups is essential.
